FALSE and DECEPTIVE DISTRESS CALLS

Chief Warrant Officer (Retired) Clifford Golm AC4GH said...
As a USCG vet I want to mention Mark Morgan's recent SOS Hoax attempt. He was reported the the Houghton Cty Sheriff, but he should have also been reported to the USCG tipline. The USCG is a Maritime law enforcement agency with arrest power domestically and internationally. We're also a division of Homeland Security will full investigatory and arrest powers concerning false distress signals. Our authority supercedes the FCC and we investigate distress calls on ALL frequencies.

Karol Madera sends a false distress signal sequence every time he's on 20 meters.

Todd Daugherty also threatened to send false distress signals.

These clown need to be shut down permanently!

Report suspect hoaxers like Mark C. Morgan; U.S. Coast Guard Tipline 1-800-264-5980

Damn straight. Cliff got that one right all the way. These idiots are endangering lives and wasting tax payer money every time they send these hoax distress calls. Responders who might be needed for a REAL emergency are taken away from their duty stations to investigate and that could be the cause of someone's death. That's why fake distress calls are a felony!

Marky,

Marky will you please learn how to comprehend what you are reading? I really hate to keep correcting you.

I'm not accusing anyone of anything, the author of the message is. And well, if the shoe
fits then wear it.

Why are you protesting so much? With all the other crap on your plate this is minor league.

Of course it is a felony, so...well keep protesting.

No one will believe you now that you have cried wolf on so many people that you made up in your mind.

Probably need a judge to sort it all out. I bet you will look lovely in bright Orange.

I was the one who called the Houghton County Sheriff Department. I was listening to a DX pile-up on 14.277 MHz when I heard a very faint "SOS" about 1 KHz away. So I tuned down to 14.276 and heard the SOS along with a callsign that the FCC database showed belonging to a Mark Morgan in Houghton County, Michigan.

I had never heard of this person before, but judging from his location, I knew of SEVERAL bodies of water inside and surrounding Houghton County. So I thought it prudent to phone the sheriff. Why the sheriff? Because of the possibility it was a hoax. At least the sheriff could drive over to Mr. Morgan's home to see if he was safe, instead of sending a bunch of CG search and rescue vessels.

Personally, I don't believe the hoax was generated by Mr. Morgan. After re-thinking the propagation factors AND the manner in which the CW was sent, I suspect it's a certain someone who has been in previous trouble with the FCC.

BTW, for those who keep using the argument that it couldn't have been me phoning this in to the sheriff since I am deaf....well I'm not totally deaf....yet. I have had cochlear implants surgically implanted in my eardrums to help relieve the pressure which is slowing the progression of deafness. The implants do make voices sound like chipmunks, but my Morse code hearing/copying abilities have actually increased.

Bill,

Appreciate you setting the "conspiracy wacko's" straight.

Seems to me it would be easier if everyone would just use their real name and/or call and stop the lies.

But I guess that's asking too much, eh?
